これ(kore)/それ(sore)/あれ(are)
※Demonstrative words are
words, for example "this", "that", "these", and
"those", that show which person or thing is being referred to.
こちら(kochira), そちら(sochira), あちら(achira) are politer than これ(kore)/それ(sore)/あれ(are)
The demonstratives これ(kore)/それ(sore)/あれ(are) work as nouns.
①これ(こちら)
"これ" refers to a thing that is close to the speaker
e.g. これは とけいです。
Kore wa tokei desu.
This is a watch.
e.g. こちらは 1000えんです。
Kochira wa 1000en desu.
This costs 1000yen.
②それ(そちら)
"それ" refers to a thing that is close to the listener.
e.g. それは シャツです。
Sore wa shatsu desu.
That is a shirt.
e.g. そちらは いくらですか。
Schira wa ikura desuka.
How much is that?
③あれ(あちら)
”あれ” refers to a thing that is neither close to the speaker nor the listener.
e.g. きむらさんのかばんは あれです。
Kimura-san no kaban wa are desu.
Ms. Kimura’s bag is that one.
e.g. あちらは フランスのワインです。
Achira wa furansu no wain desu.
That is French wine.
