Vます Verb+ます(masu)
Let's study Japanese grammar together.
・Verb: a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence
・Auxiliary verb: a verb used in forming the tenses, moods, and voices of other verbs
・Predicate: the part of a sentence that makes a statement about the subject
Using 「ます(masu)」,one of Auxiliary verbs, shows politeness toward the listener.
Vます is called “ますけい(masu-kei)”, ”ますform” and it works as a predicate.
① Future Actions
When a verb describes an action, a sentence with "Vます" as the predicate indicates that the action will be performed or is scheduled in the future.
e.g. あした うみへ いきます。
Ashita umi e ikimasu.
I will go to the beach tomorrow.
e.g. 10じから 3じまで にほんごを べんきょうします。
10ji kara 3ji made nihongo o benkyō shimasu.
I am going to study Japanese from 10 to 3 o’clock.
②Habitual Action
When the verb describes an action, a sentence with "Vます" as the predicate indicates that the action is currently being habitually repeated.
e.g. まいにち ぎゅうにゅうを のみます。
Mainichi gyūnyū o nomimasu.
I drink some milk every day.
e.g. よく としょかんへ いきます。
Yoku toshokan e ikimasu.
I often go to a library.
③Current State
When the verb expresses a state of affairs, a sentence with "Vます" as the predicate expresses the present state of affairs.
e.g. ここに ペンが あります。
Koko ni pen ga arimasu.
There is a pen here.
e.g. あそこに いぬが います。
Asoko ni inu ga imasu.
There is a dog over there.
