Elementary grammar

Let's study Japanese grammar together.


~なければなりません。

Do you have many things you have to do every day?
If you are a student, you have to do your homework and study.
If you are an office worker, you might have to prepare for meetings or meet with customers.
If you work in a café or restaurant, you have to wipe tables and prepare food.
You also have house work. You have to clean your room and do laundry.
 
In Japanese, we use the expression "〜なければなりません" in such cases.

 

👉<Use>

The expression "〜なければなりません" is used to express that it is necessary to do the action. 
In English, it is "must" or "have to.

For example, you will have an exam next week. Therefore, you have to study.
Then, you can say, 来週(らいしゅう)試験(しけん)ですから、勉強(べんきょう)しなければなりません。I have to study because I have an exam next week.

To add "なければなりません" to the " verb ないform".

 👉<Examples>

   3時から会議ですから、準備をしなければなりません

  I have a meeting at 3:00, so I have to get ready.

 

  A:遊びに行きませんか?

   B:すみません、今日は宿題をしなければなりません

 

 AWould you like to go out for fun?

 BSorry, I have to do my homework today.

 

  次のお客さまが来ますから、テーブルの上をふかなければなりません

 The next customer is coming, so I have to wash the table tops.

 

  部屋が汚いですから、掃除しなければなりません

   The room is dirty, so I have to clean it.


冷蔵庫の中になにもありませんから、スーパーへ行かなければなりません。

There is nothing in the refrigerator, so you have to go to the supermarket.


明日は早く会社へ行きますから、6時に起きなければなりません

I have to get up at 6:00 a.m. because I have to go to work early tomorrow.
